Discover the history of the Monastery of San Prudencio de Monte Laturce

The town of Clavijo is located at the top of the final end of the Cameros mountains, in La Rioja, between the valleys of the Iregua and Leza rivers, and the regions of Camero Nuevo and Viejo.

In a cave between Clavijo and the Leza valley, Saint Prudentius retired to lead the life of an anchorite . His reputation grew so much that he was eventually appointed bishop of Tarazona .

After his death in the city of Osma, the inhabitants of Osma and Tarazona disputed the possession of his remains. To resolve the conflict, they decided to leave the decision in the hands of divine providence , placing the body of San Prudencio on a mule and agreeing to bury him in the place where the mule stopped.

A small church was built on that site, which eventually became the Cistercian Monastery of San Prudencio de Monte Laturce , founded in the 12th century. The confiscation of church property by Mendizábal led to its closure and abandonment, and today the monastery lies in ruins . This route begins in the village of Clavijo and takes visitors to the ruins of the monastery.

What is the route like?

The route begins at the end of Dr. Ramón Cabezón Street , near a paved track, heading towards the southern slope of Monte Laturce. There is a parking area nearby. After about 300 metres, there is an intersection with three paths; take the middle path, which after 600 metres, leads to the Basilica of Santiago.

This 18th century Baroque basilica is built of ashlar and brick. During local festivals, Santiago and the Virgin of Tentudía, the town's patron saints, are carried in procession from this temple.

From the path to the left of the basilica, you climb about 700 metres to reach the top of Monte Laturce , at 1,039 metres above sea level, the highest point of the route.

There is a cross and a plaque commemorating the battle in which the Christians, led by Ramiro I, won in the year 844. After enjoying the views, the route continues down the opposite side , where you can appreciate the beauty of the Riojan landscape in all its splendor.

Finally, the tour concludes by returning to the starting point , leaving visitors with a deep sense of connection to the history and landscape that surrounds them.
