What is the route of the Iregua Roman road?
The trail begins at Puente Madre , on the border between Villamediana de Iregua and Logroño. From there, through the Iregua Park, you can access the Varea neighbourhood, an ancient Roman city.
The path continues along the riverbank, passing under the viaduct that connects to Villamediana, and continues along the riverbank and a tree plantation. After passing a crossroads on the right, the path passes under the bridge of the A‑68 motorway .
Continuing along the river bank and without turning off , you pass another crossing on the right and follow a path that runs along the river. After passing several paths that branch off to the left, you come to a small tunnel under the LR-254 road, which leads to the old bridge, where you cross to the other bank of the Iregua .
To the left, the path descends towards a small park, passes under the bridge and takes a paved road . After passing a detour to the left, the path continues on dirt, between orchards, up to a steep climb that takes you to the road.
Before reaching the road, take the right-of-way of the irrigation canal known as the Acedas River. This section continues along the canal until the water intake , and then, parallel to the river, continues between orchards and riverside vegetation, passing under the LR-256 and entering the urbanisations of Albelda de Iregua.
After crossing a footbridge, you leave the urban area and return to the riverbank until you reach a paved path that you leave on the left. Between fruit trees and riverside forests, you continue to another path that, from a bridge over the river, leads to the road.
Here, turn right and quickly take a path to the left, parallel to the river, which after passing under the LR-255 reaches the old bridge on the Nalda road .
Continuing along this road, take a path to the left that, between chalets, leads to a ravine. Then, turn left and go up a paved road that connects the Nalda road with Islallana .
After leaving behind the crossroads that leads to this neighbourhood of Viguera, and with views of Peña Bajenza, you reach the crossroads of the Roman bridge, where you take a dirt road. The path passes under a cliff next to the Iregua, crosses a small bridge over a ditch and climbs up until you reach the Caneco bridge, to finally reach Viguera .
